Mehmet Asatekin was born in Istanbul on January 2, 1946. He completed his primary and secondary education in Ankara, graduating from Kurtuluş High School in 1963. He received his architecture degree from the Middle East Technical University (METU) Faculty of Architecture in 1969 and his master's degree in architecture in 1971. He completed his doctorate at the Istanbul Technical University (ITU) Faculty of Architecture in 1993. During his studies at METU, he took industrial design courses offered by the American visiting professor David K. Munro in the Department of Architecture. He began working as an assistant in 1971 to prepare for the planned Industrial Design Department in the Faculty of Architecture. In the 1973-74 academic year, he conducted research on industrial design and seating ergonomics in Italy with a scholarship from the Italian government. After returning to Turkey, he continued his educational activities in the Department of Architecture and participated in the establishment of the Industrial Product Design Department with Güner Mutaf. Following the establishment of the department in 1979, he assumed the position of department head. Between 1982 and 2001, he worked as a design consultant on an adjunct basis at Aselsan. At METU (Middle East Technical University), he served as department head periodically until 1994 and as Vice Dean of the Faculty of Architecture from 1994 to 1997. He retired from METU in 2009 and continued teaching at Bahçeşehir University's Industrial Design Department in Istanbul until 2025. A member of the Chamber of Architects, the Middle East Teaching Staff Association, and the Industrial Designers Professional Organization Association (ETMK), Mehmet Asatekin is a founding member of the Industrial Design Association, the first association in Turkey in his field. Mehmet Asatekin has published pioneering works in the fields of industrial design profession and education, industrial design criteria, and ergonomics in product design, and has made significant contributions to the METU Faculty of Architecture Journal.
