Born in Zonguldak on August 10, 1952, Prof. Dr. Süleyman Gürdal Tuncel received his Bachelor's degree in Chemistry from the Middle East Technical University (METU) Faculty of Arts and Sciences in 1976, his Master's degree in Chemical Oceanography from the METU Institute of Marine Sciences in 1978, and his Ph.D. in Nuclear, Analytical and Environmental Chemistry from the University of Maryland in 1985. Prof. Dr. Tuncel worked as a research assistant at the METU Institute of Marine Sciences between 1976 and 1980, and began working as an Assistant Professor in the METU Department of Environmental Engineering in 1987. He served as an Associate Professor from 1988 to 1995 and as a Professor from 1995 to 2019. During his time at our university, Prof. Dr. Tuncel served as the Deputy Head of the Department of Environmental Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering from 1988 to 1991. During his nearly fifty-year academic career, Prof. Dr. Tuncel conducted research on the measurement of trace elements and organic pollutants in the atmosphere, their long-distance transport, receptor modeling, environmental analytical chemistry, precipitation chemistry, and trace metal chemistry in sediments. He led numerous national and international research projects, contributed significantly to our field with nearly one hundred articles to the scientific literature, and mentored numerous master's and doctoral students. He retired from his full-time position at our university on August 10, 2019. Prof. Dr. Tuncel will continue to teach and conduct scientific research part-time at the METU Department of Environmental Engineering until 2026.
