Tuğmaç Sayraç was born in 1937 in Ceyhan, Adana. After completing his high school education in 1955 at Ankara Atatürk Science High School, he continued his undergraduate education in chemistry at Karlsruhe Technical University in Germany. Tuğmaç Sayraç received his doctorate in organic chemistry from the same university in 1967. He began his academic career in 1969 at the METU Chemistry Department after completing his two-year military service. He served as the Head of the METU Chemistry Department between 1975 and 1978. He worked as a visiting professor at Philipps University in Marburg between 1972 and 1973 and at Justus Liebig University in Giessen between 1978 and 1980. He served as Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at METU between 1982-1988, Vice President of METU between 1987-1992, and as a member of the General Assembly of the Council of Higher Education, a member of the Executive Board of the Council of Higher Education, and Vice President of the Council of Higher Education between 1999-2005. In 2008, Prof. Dr. Tuğmaç Sayraç was awarded the 1st Class Cross of Merit by the Federal Republic of Germany for his pioneering work in the establishment of the Turkish-German University. He continued his duty on the board of directors of the METU Development Foundation Schools, which he contributed to its establishment, after his retirement in 2005 until his death.
