Gülerman Driver was born in Izmir in 1941. He graduated from Denizli High School in 1958. He completed his undergraduate education in 1967 and his master's degree in 1968 at METU Civil Engineering Department. He received his doctorate degree from the Department of Environmental Engineering at the University of Illinois-Champaign-Urbana in 1975. He worked as an assistant at METU Civil Engineering Department between 1968-1970 and as a lecturer between 1970-1971. In 1975, he started working as an assistant professor at METU Environmental Engineering Department. He became Associate Professor in 1982 and Professor in 1988. He served as Head of the Environmental Engineering Department between 1981-1985. He held external positions at Vienna Technical University between 1969-1970, at the University of Illinois between 1974-1975, and at Cornell University in 1979.
