Ayten Coşkunoğlu was born in 1931. He graduated from Ankara University, Department of English Language and Literature in 1953. He completed his master's degree at Bryn Mawr College. He received his doctorate degree from Istanbul University in 1967. From 1961 to 1982, he worked in the English Preparatory Unit and in the unit called "Freshman", which provided English education to undergraduate students, and made significant contributions to the formation and development of the School of Foreign Languages from the very beginning. In 1982, he was appointed as the Founding Department Head of the Faculty of Education, Department of Foreign Languages Education, and he successfully served as the Head of the Department of Foreign Languages Education between 1982-1989. Prof.Dr. Ayten Coşkunoğlu Bear continued to teach in the department's English Literature graduate program from 1998 until 2018, when she retired, and trained countless students and academics. Prof. Dr. Since Bear's first years at METU, Ayten Coşkunoğlu has contributed to both the English education of the university and the formation and development of the Humanities and especially the Literature wing.
