Ferit Bingel was born in Artvin in 1946. In 1978, he received his doctorate in Fisheries Oceanography from Christian Albrechts University, Institute of Oceanography Kiel, Germany. He joined METU as a faculty member in 1979, during the founding years of the Institute. He won the TÜBİTAK Science Incentive Award in 1983 and became the first marine scientist to receive this award. Dr. served as the director of the Institute between 2007 and 2012. Bingel retired in 2012. Dr., who played leading roles in the development of marine biology and fisheries sciences both at METU Marine Sciences Institute and in Turkey. Bingel is among our professors who served METU-DBE the most. Dr. Bingel has contributed greatly to the development of METU-DBE in terms of education, research and infrastructure. Prior to his directorship, he also served in administrative duties as Deputy Director of the Institute and Head of the Department of Marine Biology and Fisheries. Dr. In addition to conducting research in various fields, especially the evaluation of fish stocks, fish population dynamics and biological processes in the marine environment, Bingel wrote the book "Investigation of Fish Populations", which is a reference for future marine scientists.
