After completing Antalya Dumlupınar Primary School and his middle and high school education at TED Ankara College, he graduated from METU Civil Engineering Department in 1965. After receiving his master's degree in 1966, he started working as an assistant and teaching in his department. He completed his doctorate in METU Engineering Sciences and conducted research in the field of applied mechanics in the same department, and later resumed his duties as a faculty member in the Civil Engineering Department. He also held administrative positions such as Dean of Student Affairs and Head of the Department of Engineering Sciences between 1976 and 1982. He continued to teach after retiring from METU in 2006. Engin Karaesmen, whose wife is also a faculty member at METU, has three children and four grandchildren who are METU graduates.
