Ural Akbulut graduated from METU Department of Chemistry in 1969 with a master's degree in 1970. He received his PhD from the University of South Florida Department of Chemistry in the US in 1973. He studied electrochemical polymerization and the effect of electric field on polymerization reactions in his doctoral thesis. He worked as a post-doctoral researcher in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Maryland in the USA until 1975. Akbulut returned to METU Department of Chemistry in 1975 as a lecturer. He was appointed as assistant professor in 1976 and associate professor in 1979. Akbulut, who was appointed as a professor in 1985 at the Department of Chemistry at the Ankara University, worked as the Deputy Dean at Ankara University Science Faculty. Akbulut, who was appointed to the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy of Ankara University in 1986, was brought to the Vice Rector of Ankara University in the same year. He returned to METU Department of Chemistry as a professor in 1989 and became METU General Secretary in 1990. Akbulut served as Vice Rector of METU between 1992-2000 and served as Rector between 2000-2008. He retired from METU in 2012. He is currently an additional faculty member at METU Department of Chemistry and the Chairman of METU Informatics Institute URAP. Akbulut won TUBITAK Encouragement Award in 1985, the United States Benz Alumni Award (USF & BENZ) in 1996, Turkish Chemical Society Service Award in 2001, Italian Knight Medal in 2006, ANGIAD-Educator of the Year Award in 2007, Lions International Achievement Award in 2008 and Japan-Hyogo State’s International Achievement Award in 2009. Akbulut has 98 ISI articles, 3 ISI notations and 1548 citations to his work. He is married and father of a child.
